Food cart gives released prisoners a second chance

The Streets Food Cart in Eugene is a new nonprofit rehabilitation program for ex-felons.

The hope is to soon hire additional ex-felons so that the food cart, at West Sixth Avenue and Lincoln Street, is run and managed entirely by former prisoners who will be employed at the cart for six months at a time. The intention, Bob Swan says, is to provide work experience and references that ex-offenders can later use to find more permanent jobs.
“Getting a job is the hardest thing out of prison,” Bob Swan said. “Imprisonment becomes more comfortable than (being) outside of prison.”
