Oregon gives elderly, disabled homeowners a tax break

The Oregon House unanimously endorsed a bill that gives elderly and disabled homeowners a two-year reprieve on their property taxes.

Changes to the tax deferral program last year dropped the number of participants from 10,400 to about 5,000.

House Bill 4039, which passed the House Thursday, doesn't go as far as senior advocates had wanted and it doesn't undo the 2011 legislative changes. 
But the dramatic drop in program participants left enough money in the fund for lawmakers to give some owners a two-year reprieve before they are cut off altogether. 
The bill would cover the property taxes for homeowners who had submitted their recertification paperwork but were disqualified from the program solely because they had a reverse mortgage.
