Clackamas County commissioners are considering ending a subsidy for the Canby ferry service.

After learning that Clackamas County subsidizes the ferry to the tune of about $455,000 a year, county commissioners are now set to consider whether they should continue to pay. Ending the county subsidy could subsequently spell the end of the ferry, which will celebrate its centenary in 2014. Continuing the ferry could mean price hikes of at least 150 percent for single rides, and the start of fees for bicyclists and pedestrians.
In the 2010-11 fiscal year, the ferry cost $574,627 to operate, but only brought in $119,005. Most cars paid only $2 per trip; the county needed to charge about $8 per vehicle in order to break even on the 69,800 vehicles carried that year. Instead, the county subsidized the ferry with $455,622 out of its road fund.
