The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 189 endorsed state Rep. Jefferson Smith for Portland mayor.
The union, which represents about 1,000 city of Portland and Portland Development Commission employees, also endorsed state Rep. Mary Nolan, who's challenging Commissioner Amanda Fritz, and Steve Novick, who's running to replace Commissioner Randy Leonard, who's retiring. In a press release announcing the endorsement, AFSCME touted the group's influence, saying Local 189's decision would sway its parent organization representing 10,000 members in the Portland area.
