Since 1996, Portland-based Rumblefish has licensed music for online video, keeping up with the rapidly changing market.
With new licensing deals, and new technologies in development, Rumblefish may now be nearing an inflection point.
The small, privately held company aims to marry music with technology.
If you add a song to your video, and post it on YouTube or other popular online video sites, the site's managers and music license holders will check to see if you're using copyrighted music without permission. If so, video sharing sites will often (though not always) block the video.
Rumblefish offers a legal alternative. In partnership with YouTube, it operates an iTunes-style music store called Friendly Music, which offers licenses to 500,000 songs at $2 apiece.
