Three University of Oregon students turned a mead-making hobby into a fully-fledged business called Blue Dog Mead.
Their company, Blue Dog Mead, recently expanded into the former Hummingbird Wholesale warehouse next to the train tracks downtown. Last month in their new location, they waited with anticipation and a bit of anxiety as their first big batch of mead made in 250-gallon tanks fermented. Up until that point, they had been making mead in 5-gallon batches, a much smaller investment. It was big risk that paid off when they successfully released the batch around Thanksgiving.
Mead goes back thousands and thousands of years. It is considered to be the world’s first alcoholic drink. “While no one can pinpoint the exact time period or location where mead was discovered, there is evidence of it in nearly every ancient culture. Mead was the preferred drink during the Mediterranean ‘Age of Gold’, and the word for drunk in classical Greek translates to ‘intoxicated with honey.’ The Vedas (Hindu holy book) mentions honey as a sacred item as far back as 8000 years ago,” according to Home Brew Supply.
