California company sues Oregonians who shared movies online

Voltage Pictures LLC has sued six Oregonians it believes have illegally shared movies online using the peer-to-peer file-sharing site, BitTorrent.

The California company has sued six Oregonians it calls "Doe" with an associated internet protocol address. It says the six infringed copyrights, directly and indirectly, and is seeking unspecified damages. Voltage also says the file-sharers violated Oregon trademark law.

While Voltage doesn't yet know the names of each defendant, it has asked the court to allow it identify each user -- all subscribers to Comcast -- by subpoenaing his or her internet provider. The judges, one in Portland and one in Eugene, have granted those requests.
