Portland mayor hires help to teach diversity

Mayor Charlie Hales is hiring an outside consultant to host a diversity seminar for white males only.

When Hales ran for mayor in 2012, he questioned whether Portland needed an Office of Equity and Human Rights—a $1.2 million department dedicated to ensuring fairness in race, gender and disability.

In less than two years, he’s received plenty of lessons on how much the city has to learn about diversity.

Hales now believes the city needs training beyond what the Office of Equity and Human Rights provides. The mayor and his male staffers will attend a 3½-day seminar in July that a city document says is “designed to help white male personnel learn how to react to issues in a white male-dominated culture.”

“White males only” is also discriminatory. Not that we can't use a good reminder but other groups also trend towards an entitlement mentality because of history which also causes tension. Do the course but include all. We are all one people regardless of our physical differences and should be treated as such. Shame on you Charlie to think it's all about the white men who are intolerant.

Oh please...we are paying someone to solve a non existent problem, wasting tax dollars that could go to fill in potholes on 23rd Ave and other major Portland streets.

A white male dominated culture? How 1960s of you. A three day junket where you supposedly "learn" something that is incredibly obvious and said by Reverend Martin Luther King Jr, judge people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. That goes for white people too.

Say I have a brilliant idea, why not diversity training for professional sports since its dominated by males of color? Obviously it's not fair that short fat white females are denied access to the NBA.

Charles hire a few accountants and budget people and while you're at it someone who prioritizes city streets instead of bike paths.

When WHITE people do it, it's called EVIL COLONIALISM and white children must be ETERNALLY PUNISHED FOR IT

When NON-WHITES do it, its called DIVERSITY and you MUST celebrate it or you are an evil white supremacist nazi racist!
