Nine Oregon counties declare drought emergency

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, 9% of the state is in extreme drought; 46% is experiencing severe drought.

Kitzhaber issued the drought declarations in Grant, Josephine and Wheeler counties. They join Crook, Harney, Jackson, Klamath, Lake and Malheur counties.

The declarations allow increased flexibility in how water is managed to ensure that limited supplies are used as efficiently as possible. They also make the counties eligible for federal assistance.
