Wine growlers once again legal in Oregon

Under a previous ruling, selling refillable wine containers was illegal unless the business had a bottling license.

"I saw this as an example where a federal agency simply has not kept up with the times and is out of touch," Sen. Ron Wyden said at a news conference held in a Southeast Portland wine shop.

The ruling "put a cork in their ability to grow," Wyden said. It would have required stores and small bottle shops to be subject "to the same burdensome record-keeping, labeling and registration requirement as large wine bottling operations."

Market of Choice is on a tear. In 2012 the 35-year-old Eugene-based grocery chain opened a central kitchen/distribution center in its hometown. The market opened a third Portland store in the Cedar Mill neighborhood this year; a Bend outpost broke ground in March. A fourth Portland location is slated for the inner southeast “LOCA” development, a mixed-use project featuring condos and retail.
