Lane Community College sees cash gap

A budget shortfall could force the college to lay off faculty and staff.

The cause of the projected deficit is a continued steep decline in student enrollment, which has fallen 30 percent since its peak of 15,417 four years ago.

“We don’t know if we’ve hit bottom,” President Mary Spilde said, so her administration is planning for shortfalls of between $10.9 million to $12.6 million.

College administrators will decide in the next couple of weeks how to handle the financial upset. They’ve scheduled a special meeting of the LCC Board on April 28 to consider proposed cuts.
