Twin methanol plants in Columbia County considered environmentally safe

Supporters of the two $1 billion-refineries say emissions would be "cleaner than those from factories that use petroleum or coal to make methanol."

The plants at Port Westward and the Port of Kalama would produce methanolfrom natural gas as a cleaner alternative to coal and petroleum, which are more commonly used to make the chemicals that go into plastics and rubber for consumer goods.
