Springfield Renaissance Development Group purchased its second downtown property to continue redeveloping the area.
The group is hoping to inject another shot of momentum into downtown revitalization following its development of the Wildish Community Theater, which opened seven years ago, about three blocks to the east. The group raised about $2.4 million in grants and donations to purchase and renovate the old McKenzie Theater.
The theater, which has become a cultural and activity hub downtown, is now owned by a nonprofit group that includes members of the development group, Springfield School District and Willamalane Park and Recreation District. The Academy of Arts and Academics, an arts-focused alternative high school, manages the theater.
