Chemeketa Community College runs the College Inside Program in the Oregon State Penitentiary and the Oregon State Correctional Institute, but funding is in jeopardy.
“We were just notified that (the private donor) would like us to find additional resources,” said Betsy Simpkins, the program’s coordinator. “He’s no longer in a position to be able to fund the program but he has nothing but awesome things to say about the program.”
Since 2007, the anonymous donor has contributed more than half a million dollars to the program. Funding has helped pay a portion of the tuition costs for inmates who are within five years of release from prison and who have at least 18 months of clear conduct.
