Oregon last for health insurance sign-ups

Oregon is dead last among 48 states reporting for the number of people whose health insurance applications had been processed.

All 50 states have new insurance exchanges under the federal health care overhaul. The exchanges are supposed to be online marketplaces where people can find out whether they qualify for Medicaid — the insurance program funded by state and federal governments — or for tax subsidies to help purchase private insurance.

Nationally, the Obama administration revealed that just 26,794 people enrolled for health insurance during the first, flawed month of operations for the federal “Obamacare” website.

Adding in enrollment of more than 79,000 in the 14 states with their own websites, the nationwide number of 106,000 October sign-ups was barely one-fifth of what officials had projected — and a small fraction of the millions who have received widely publicized private coverage cancellations as a result of the federal law.

I thought the advertising program of Cover Oregon was the most juvenile, moronic and pointless facet of this program. Now we see the talents of the website developers rank right up with the people who thought cartoonish drawings of Mr Sun, butterflies and trees told people how to get healthcare insurance.

How ironic the "green" state of Oregon is now reduced to paper applications... which will be stuck in the same queue as those on the website.

This law has a myriad of unintended consequences that are being revealed day by day. Congress SHOULD have read the bill and maybe some of them would have been prevented.

I'm very pro "Cover Oregon" but I have to agree with this. When I saw the first commercial I was embarrassed for our state. I am planning to use the online market to shop, but haven't yet -- the same way I don't use version 1 of any software.

Tamra thank you for your comment. As someone who works in this world (medical care) I am incredibly frustrated by the waste of money that could be going to help people get medical care.

Oregon is once again making the national news for the EPIC FAIL of Cover Oregon. Money that should have gone for healthcare and IT went for silly commercials and billboards. Someone is asleep at the wheel and has forgotten the objective of getting medical care to patients.
