Construction will begin this month on Portland's long-vacant Washington High School.
Venerable Group Inc., a local development firm with a long list of historic preservation projects under its belt, has been exploring how to preserve and redevelop the site for several years. It said Monday it would close next week on a deal to buy the building and start work Oct. 28.
The 116,000-square-foot school will be converted into 55,000 square feet of offices and 18,000 square feet of retail space, along with an added rooftop deck. The school's basic structure, with its 14-foot-wide hallways and other trappings of typical high schools, will remain, and the company is applying to add the building to the National Register of Historic Places.
