Special session helps tuition costs

A boost in education funding could mean a break in rising tuition for college students.

State lawmakers Wednesday approved an extra $100 million for the State School Fund during a special legislative session, increasing the two-year budget for K-12 schools by 1.6 percent to $6.6 billion.

House Bill 5101 also includes an extra $15 million for the state’s 17 community colleges to freeze or limit any increase in tuition and fees for the next school year. Funding for the state’s seven public universities increased by $25 million.
