Union members call 'grand bargain' a 'grand theft'

Gov. Kitzhaber's 'grand bargain' was hit by union members and environmentalists in its first public hearing.

During the first of two public hearings on the package, lawmakers heard from farmers who hate it, farmers who love it and union members wearing buttons calling what's known as the "grand bargain" a "grand theft."

The partisan bickering in Washington, D.C. could lead to a shutdown of the federal government, Kitzhaber noted, suggesting that Oregonians are better than that. "We can come together and do the right thing for Oregon because we are Oregonians."

If the union members think the people are going to pay the outrageous retirement agreements, we didn't vote for, they are fools, when you make a deal that is so unbalanced, you are participating in the the failure of your deal. It's over, be reasonable or be a victim of your own greed.

On April 1 I attended a forum at the University of Portland on the sharing economy. The event featured panelists from Lyft and Airbnb, as well as Portland Mayor Charlie Hales. Asked about the impact of tech-driven sharing economy services. Hales said the new business models are reshaping the landscape. “But,” he added, “I don’t pretend to understand how a lot of this [technology] works.”
