Centers that offer drop-in and flexible childcare are opening in the Portland area.

As a result, after-hours care at centers costs more than many shift workers can afford, said Shannon Lipscomb, who studies child care issues as an assistant professor of human development and family science at Oregon State University-Cascades in Bend. DropNplay's rate will max out at $15 an hour for one child, with discounts for siblings and parents who buy an annual membership.

Experts and providers say there's a definite need for alternate-hour child care. But government statistics on the prevalence of alternate shift workers are as hard to come by as the care itself.
