Final construction on Facebook's Prineville data center is anticipated for the end of this year.
The data center has proven to be one of the most energy efficient facilities of its kind in the world, despite criticism from environmental groups like Greenpeace International, for alleged high uses of energy and water. The Facebook Prineville Data Center utilizes evaporative cooling, and boasts a power usage effectiveness ratio of 1.06 to 1.08. This compares to an average power usage (PUE) of 2.0 to 3.0 for most data centers. The evaporative cooling technology in Building 1 results in 52 percent less energy and 70 percent less water than a chilled water system, to operate the data center servers.
