Oregon nurseryman bets on sea berry

The owner of Northwoods Nursery in Molalla hopes that the sea berry will become the next "super fruit," like goji berries and acai berries.

"Compared to some of those, this is a proven product. It's not like it's a new thing," said Gilbert, who owns Northwoods Nursery in Molalla, Ore. "It's not that it hasn't caught on. Nobody's tried it. Like any new crop, it needs exposure."

Gilbert, who specializes in rare and exotic plants, initially brought back cuttings of sea berry plants after a trip to the former Soviet Union in the early 1990s.

Five years in the making, the Portland Mercado — the city’s first Latino public market — will celebrate its grand opening April 11. A $3.5 million public-private partnership spearheaded by Hacienda CDC, the market will house 15 to 20 businesses in the food, retail and service sectors.
