Food-makers settle in East Multnomah County

Food processors are increasingly locating in the area between east Portland and Gresham.

Not only are local companies filling out menus, they're filling up household bank accounts: Combined, 10 of the largest food-makers and distributors in Gresham and neighboring communities east of Portland employ roughly 900 people and pay more than $25 million in annual wages and benefits.

Jerry Gardner, business development manager for the Oregon Department of Agriculture, said the area from east Portland through Gresham has everything many food-makers want: excellent transportation infrastructure, affordable land, ready workforce and plenty of low-cost water.
