Recent rain and the current heat wave are hurting the early and mid-season Northwest cherry harvest.
Excessive rain can cause the skin on ripening cherries to crack open, while extreme heat causes them to soften. Because of the combined effect, many growers have decided to abandon those crops and move on to varieties that ripen later in the season.
The poor weather means about half the fruit expected won't be harvested. But the harvest is only halfway over, so the impact will be smaller by the end of the season.
