Only one year into his job as Oregon's chief education officer, Rudy Crew accepted another job as a college president in New York City.

Crew departs without having reviewed the first round of achievement compacts he forged -- in some cases with substantial friction -- with school districts, community colleges and universities. He also has not finished shepherding four strategic initiatives through the 2013 Legislature, which has viewed them with some skepticism and indicated it will not fund them at nearly the level Crew wanted.

Kitzhaber pledged to name an interim successor by July 15 and to meet with the Oregon Education Investment Board in the next few days to plan seeking a permanent replacement.

In accepting the presidency of 7,000-student Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, Crew acknowledged that he switches jobs so often that "it does sound as if I can't keep a job." But he pledged that the new job in a city he called home "is it for me." He promised to devote his time, love and life to serving Medgar Evers students, most of whom are low-income minority students whose parents did not go to college.
