Samsung offering first Intel-powered tablet

Samsung's new Galaxy Tab 3 will run on Intel microprocessors.

Intel chips dominate the market for PCs, laptops and servers. But smartphone and tablet manufacturers – including the two biggest, Samsung and Apple – have thus far been nearly unanimous in favoring chip designs from British rival ARM Holdings.

The arrival of Intel chips in the Galaxy 3 isn’t a surprise – various reports had indicated it was coming, and Intel had promised that it had some important tablet design wins coming this year. Intel has cautioned, though, that it expects less success in smartphones this year, as it is still building sets of chips for the latest wireless networks.
