Oregon considers intern protections

Oregon legislators are considering House Bill 2699 to extend workplace protections to interns.

Currently, interns don't enjoy many of the same civil rights protections that employees do in Oregon workplaces, said Charlie Burr, a spokesman for Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian.

Among other things, the bill would extend protections to interns who are sexually harassed, discriminated against because of their age, gender or sexual orientation, or who retaliated against because they reported an employer in violation of the law. Under the measure, Burr said, a judge could award damages to an intern if an employer was found to violate one of these workplace protections.
