The results from our annual Private 150 ranking are understandably bleak, given that the economy has been in recession for nearly 20 months. Revenues and jobs for Oregon's privately held powerhouses fell steeply, with Big Timber continuing to take a beating, along with heavy manufacturing and auto dealerships. There were exceptions to the general downward trend, but the gains of the few were modest in comparison to the losses of the many.

The 100 Best Green Companies rankings were calculated by Oregon Business research editor Brandon Sawyer and research partner Davis, Hibbitts & Midghall based on confidential employee surveys and a report completed by each company.

Though few people have been out making new investments lately, there is one — though he’s more entity than person, really — who has: Uncle Sam.

Northwest Pipe Company president Brian Dunham says that during past recessions, the firm’s chairman has joked that they should have bought a company plane — if only so they could sell it and cut costs when times were tough.
