A discussion on banning plastic bags from grocery stores and other retailers is in the works for the Eugene City Council.

Environment Oregon and local chapters of the Sierra Club and other groups began pushing for Oregon cities to pass bans after an attempt at a statewide ban died in the Legislature last summer.
The Portland City Council passed a ban shortly thereafter. Now other cities besides Eugene are contemplating bans, including Seattle, Corvallis, Newport and Ashland.

    With high unemployment and Eugene stores complaining about a lack of shoppers, the City Council is worried about plastic bags? Clearly they have too much time on their hands.

    FWIW I always take my cloth bag whether for groceries or other items. I believe in reusing, recycling and repurposing. But I also think that city councils that worry about plastic bags or goldfish sales or circumcision of male infants have an odd set of priorities.

    Maybe some thought about encouraging shoppers, businesses and jobs would be more productive?
