Several game developers in Eugene are adapting to the changing market as it shifts towards downloadable content and games played on social networks.

“This is the beginning of another high-growth time” for game development in Eugene, predicts Randy Dersham, head of the Eugene branch of Playdom, a Disney company that creates “social games,” such as its award-winning “Social City” city-building game on Facebook.

Dersham opened Playdom’s Eugene office in August 2009. It has about 40 employees now, and Dersham expects the head count to at least double by next year.

“We’re probably going to be growing exponentially — faster than anyone else in town,” he said. “We have quite an opportunity.”
