The Oregon Senate approved two bills to extend federal unemployment benefits through the rest of the year and state benefits through July.

In a unanimous vote, the Senate passed Senate Bill 637, which will allow the state to access additional federal unemployment benefits through December, a move lawmakers say will help about 50,000 people.

While that bill passed without debate, legislators spent several minutes discussing whether or not the state should extend emergency unemployment benefits to people some say are “unemployable” without additional training.

Senate Bill 638 extends state unemployment benefits through July 2nd, affecting about 17,000. Some of the state benefits are scheduled to end in April.
