The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has joined on to help investigate the Astoria fire that ravaged businesses Thursday night.

"We don't have fires like this very often, so the local detectives do not have the expertise in investigating fires like the state and ATF," [assistant Astoria police chief Alan] Oja said. Five agents were on the scene Saturday and were expected to return Tuesday at the latest, he said.

Chester Trabucco owns both buildings and was set to turn them over to investors in foreclosure proceedings on Dec. 30. He said he is being unfairly targeted by some as responsible for the fires.

"Let the fire investigators go in and let them find how the fire was started before someone gets targeted for whole thing," Trabucco said. "Let's find out why the fire started and then determine XYZ."
