Customers at Eugene's three Rhythm & Blooms locations are often unaware that many of the flowers being sold are homegrown by owner Rachel Mordhorst. In a time when the economic situation means many customers can no longer afford the luxury of flowers, having a home-grown product gives Mordhorst a boost.
“I’ve been trying to make an effort to talk about the farm, the farm, the farm,” Mordhorst said. “Prior to this year, I hadn’t really thought about what a great asset it is.”

It’s the farm, however, that sets her apart, she said. In a challenging economy, the farm gives her some flexibility with supply and pricing, plus a selling point for consumers who want to support local businesses and reduce the environmental impact from shipping products long distances, she said.
