Economy crushes grape growers

Small vineyard owners are suffering this year because of the economy, with many unable to sell their product to local wineries.

Mid-range fine wines, which are more likely to come from local grapes, are doing especially poor.

Other factors are at work as well.

For one, wineries have increasingly planted their own vines, enabling them to produce estate wines commanding a better price in the market. For another, the weather remains very uncertain this year, and that makes this year’s grape crop a bigger gamble than most.
