Newport has been waiting for months, but today they can finally be sure.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration made the official announcement about the location of the new Pacific Marine Operations Center this morning.
"Everybody has been standing at the altar," said U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., on Wednesday. "Nobody has been willing to say 'I do,' and now with this announcement we feel the marriage is going forward between the federal government and Newport.
"You just have to drive home the point that this is happening because nobody has ever put together a better, more impressive communitywide effort to roll out the red carpet for taxpayers like the folks in Newport."
