A class-action law suit was filed earlier this week against Google for collecting Wi-Fi data while creating its street view maps.

Now, a Portland judge has ordered Google to hand over copies of the data, which the company was intending to destroy.

Google's admitted earlier this month that its cars had collected Wi-Fi data, a "mistake," the company said, that resulted from a software programming error. The California company said the data was never publicly available, and Google said it took the data off its internal networks and began talking with regulators about how to dispose of the information.

The revelation triggered inquiries by governments around the world, a critical letter from U.S. lawmakers, and lawsuits in Portland, Washington, D.C., California and Massachusetts.
