Biomass energy is a "reliable renewable," because it works whether the wind is blowing or the sun is shining.
Iberdrola Renewables is hoping to build on its past success, including a plant in Tacoma, by building a new Biomass plant in Lake County, Central Oregon.
Portland wind developer EverPower has explored a few biomass opportunities, but David McClain, the firm’s senior director of development, said it can be risky business.
“Biomass fuels are very susceptible to inflation,” McClain said. “If you’re using wood for fuel, and the wood starts to have a higher value as a product like particle board, there may not be as much fuel available in the future to produce electricity.”
