Beaverton hopes to lead suburbs in adoption of new sustainability measures, by partnering with California-based SolarCity to provide discounted solar panels to 50 homes.

Mayor Denny Doyle will announce the project this week as the first initiative in Beaverton's new sustainability plan.

Company officials say they're confident that solar demand exists beyond Portland's environmentally friendly borders and into the suburbs.

"We sure do think so. We've gotten great reception within the city," said Rob LaVigne, the Portland regional director for SolarCity. "I don't think it's just a city-centric mindset."

Community-wide solar is a great idea but it is still important to get multiple bids. There is another community-wide solar program, Solar Energy PDX, that offers much better pricing than Solar Beaverton. A city should not endorse one company without a bidding process; consumers who rely on that endorsement lose.
