Labor, education and economic development officials say jobs are coming for Central Oregon, slowly but steadily.

Carolyn Eagan, regional economist with the Oregon Employment Department, expects industry growth through 2018, with more jobs created in construction, manufacturing and other sectors.

Roger Lee, executive director of Economic Development for Central Oregon, said unemployment numbers are a lagging indicator and not good for predicting what is happening in an economy. Job growth needs to be considered, too, before attempting to predict what the future holds.

Over the past nine years, the Deschutes County area has created more jobs while other areas have had static job growth, he said.
