A new radio ratings system taking effect this month will play a big role in more accurately measuring Portland's radio market.

About 1,400 people are being paid to carry Portable People Meters, which automatically record nearby radio signals. The new system is an improvement on the old diary system.

“There’s going to be a lot of changes in the next three to nine months,” predicts Tommy Austin, operations manager for K103 and six other Clear Channel-owned stations in the Portland area. Stations will go to great lengths now to earn better ratings – and woo more advertisers – under the new system, Austin says...

New Arbitron data released last week, based on the people meters, shows K103 captured more than 10 percent of the total radio audience the last three months of 2009, peaking higher for its Christmas music format after Thanksgiving.
