Oregon tech sector struggles

Oregon's technology manufacturing sector is down 30% from its peak in 2001 thanks to the recession and offshoring.

But with growth plans from major local companies like TriQuint Semiconductor and Intel, the industry is pushing forward.

So while technology manufacturing hasn't turned out to be Oregon's golden ticket, it's not an outright bust. Technology production still pays outsized wages compared to similar jobs, and the state still benefits proportionately.

"There isn't as much glamour around the industry as there was in 2000, for all the obvious reasons," said Steve Mick, human resources manager at the ON Semiconductor Corp. factory where Olayos works. "But I think there's going to be ongoing opportunity."
