Portland water not so great

Portland's drinking water may not be as clean as proud city officials like to say it is. In a survey by an environmental group, Portland ranks 59th out of 100 large American cities for water quality.

But while cities like Austin and Minneapolis outrank Portland, one city official thinks the low ranking may have nothing to do with the water quality.

The survey was conducted by the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit organization that tries to protect children from toxic chemicals in both the environment and consumer products.

Portland Water Bureau Director David Shaff said toxic chemicals have not been found in the city’s drinking water. He suspected the relatively low ranking was because the city was late turning in some required water quality reports.
