Oregon Mattress Co. is launching two new retail stores in Beaverton and Lake Oswego, a bold move given the economy.

But while furniture businesses struggle, President David Walker says now is a good time to expand in the bedding industry.

The Oregon Mattress Co. was founded in 1932 by the Walkers’ grandfather, Cecil Walker. The company’s manufacturing plant is in Newberg, and up until opening the two new stores, the company had done all of its business nationwide on the wholesale and contract side, according to Mike Vanier, the company’s vice president of business development.

“The retail mattress business within the Portland metro area is about $105 million a year, and Oregon Mattress has just a fraction of a single percent of that,” Vanier said. “So as we started talking about where to grow business, and where to have increased cash flow and annual liquidity, it made sense to get right into the Portland metro area with our own stores.”
