The City of Pendleton plans to offer free demolition for its downtown renewal efforts, provided owners build structures three times the previous value. Failing to develop within 18 months would oblige property owners to pay back the city 110% the cost of demolition, City Manager Larry Lehman told the Eastern Oregonian. Budgeting and details such as what to do with buried fuel tanks remain to be seen, but the plan is a welcome precursor to the expected tourist influx in 2010. Is this a program worth replicating?
