A Salem area based winery opened a 2,800-square-foot wine center in downtown McMinnville just in time for the Thanksgiving, the industry's biggest sales weekend.

Willamette Valley Vineyards may be one of the state's largest wineries, but being located in Turner, south of Salem, its miles from the heart of Oregon's $1 billion wine industry. The solution: open a facility farther north in Yamhill County designed to promote everything from sustainable agricultural practices to the premium pinot noirs produced by its competitors.

"We want to be a first stop for the thousands of people who travel every year to Oregon wine country," said Jim Bernau,Willamette Valley Vineyards' founder and president. "For anyone wanting to know where to taste, where to eat, where to stay, we'll give them more than enough information to get them on their way."
