Tax foe defends history

After leading a campaign to back Measure 1 in 1993 - which raised corporate income taxes - political consultant Mark Nelson says his decision to fight tax-raising Measure 67 is not a flip-flop in his stance.

“Not at all,” he said. The two measures “are totally different animals.”

Then, and now, the corporate tax rate increases were elements of multifaceted tax-raising packages. The 1993 version had as its centerpiece a 5 percent sales tax. Boosting the corporate tax rate and cutting income and property taxes were included by the Legislature as deal-sweeteners for voters.
