Paper mill crumbles

International Paper Co. is shutting down its mill near Albany, a move that surprised the 270 employees who are now losing their jobs.

On Thursday, the Memphis-based company blamed the global recession for sapping demand for packaging products in its decision to close a total of four mills nationwide.

The announcement stunned workers early Thursday morning, said Todd Dittmer, local president of the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers, which represents 210 hourly employees at the mill.
