Demand for nonprofit services in Clatsop County is increasing, but low donations have created a challenge.

As service agencies in Clatsop County continue to stretch to assist the growing numbers in need, state and local nonprofits are trying to strategically outwit the fickle economy, so they can maintain and even increase the flow of money and services to mirror the surge in demand.

Some have succeeded with "out-of-the-box" thinking to hit their fundraising targets, and others have gotten one-time windfalls of federal stimulus cash to pay for overhead expenses. Others have changed how they give out grants and scholarships, hoping that investment portfolios will continue to slowly recover.
