Following scrapped plans for a convention center hotel, Portland's status as a convention capital - which supporters argue would drive tourism revenue - is debated.

The Oregon Convention Center's No. 1 job is to attract national conventions. The out-of-town attendees, as the theory goes, spur the regional economy by importing spending at restaurants and retail shops.

Tourism boosters say the city will continue to lose out-of-town conventions as long as it lacks a large hotel next door to the convention center. Meeting planners, they say, prefer big hotels next door to convention centers to save on travel time.
