Oregon families are suffering

A survey of the recession's effects revealed that nearly a third of Oregonians say that they or someone in their household have been laid off or lost their job this year - among other dismal numbers.

Managers of the Northwest Area Foundation, the organization that commissioned the survey, say the numbers - higher in Oregon than nationally - show the recession's toll surpasses what the state's 12.2 percent unemployment rate would suggest.

By several measures Oregon, which has one of the nation's highest unemployment rates, significantly exceeds other states in impressions of the recession's toll.
