A new $10 million redevelopment project in downtown Salem, set to be finished by the end of the year, is surviving economic challenges with its uniqueness.
When it is completed later this year WaterPlace will house retail and professional office space on its ground floor. The 40,000-square-foot building includes a six-story office tower. The wing that parallels Liberty Street will be topped by a roof terrace; negotiations are under way for it to become a restaurant. WaterPlace’s central, glassy lobby will feature a 25-foot-high ceiling with a bridge to the roof terrace.
“It’s been a fairly long undertaking for us, but we identified the need in this marketplace and in this prominent location to redevelop several underperforming properties,” architect Garth Brandaw said. “We were able to combine that into a larger development site and take advantage of what we consider the finest location in Salem.”
